How to Choose a Reliable Used Car for Your Daily Commute

Ah, the daily commute. A chance to enjoy some quality time with yourself, your favourite playlist and, quite possibly, the same roundabout you were looking at ten minutes ago.

Whether you’re starting a new job, returning to a regular commute after the summer or simply spending more time on the road, having a car you can depend on makes the whole routine a little easier. The last thing you need at 7.30 on a Monday morning is a dashboard light making an unexpected appearance.

So, what actually makes a good commuter car?

It’s tempting to start with a particular make or model, but we’d start with something less exciting and much more useful: your everyday routine. How far are you driving? What sort of roads do you use? What will the car cost to run? And, most importantly, can you rely on it to get you there and back?

Here are a few things worth considering when choosing a reliable used car for commuting.

1. Start With Your Actual Commute

A five-mile drive into town is very different from covering 50 miles of A-roads and motorways each day.

Before looking at cars, think about your typical week. Consider your mileage, the roads you regularly use, where you’ll park and whether you need space for passengers, children or luggage.

It can help you avoid paying for a larger or more powerful car than you really need. After all, there’s little point hauling around seven seats every day if the only regular passenger is your work bag.

For many commuters, the sensible choice is simply a comfortable, practical car that suits the miles they actually cover.

2. Look Beyond the Purchase Price

Finding an affordable used car is important, but the price on the windscreen is only part of what you’ll spend.

Fuel, insurance, servicing, maintenance, tyres and applicable vehicle tax all contribute to the real cost of running a car. If you’re considering finance, your repayments need to fit comfortably alongside those costs too.

This becomes particularly important when you’re commuting five days a week. A car that looks like a bargain initially may feel rather less bargain-like after a few months when the petrol station staff know you by name. 

Work out roughly how many miles you expect to cover each month and think about the overall cost of ownership, not just what it costs to get the keys.

3. Put Reliability Near the Top of Your List

When you rely on your car to get to work every morning, reliability matters. Monday mornings have enough problems of their own.

There’s no badge on the bonnet that can guarantee trouble-free motoring, so look at the individual vehicle too. Its age, mileage, condition, service history and MOT history can all help you build a clearer picture.

Your aim should be to find something that makes sense for your particular routine, rather than chasing a number on a specification sheet.

5. Don’t Forget About Comfort

Comfort can seem relatively unimportant during a ten-minute test drive. After an hour sitting in traffic, you may feel differently.

Make sure you’re comfortable with the seating position, visibility and controls. Think about the features you’ll genuinely appreciate during the commute rather than paying extra for things you’re unlikely to use.

6. Take the Car for a Proper Test Drive

A photograph and vehicle specification can tell you plenty, but they can’t tell you whether you’ll actually enjoy driving the car every morning.

During a test drive, pay attention to the driving position, visibility, steering, controls and general comfort. If it’s a manual, make sure you’re happy with the clutch and gearbox. Think about how easy it will be to park at home or work too.

Most importantly, give yourself enough time to decide whether it feels right.
